The original Rover engine was in point of fact a Buick engine founded in america in 1961. The engine block itself was made of an all-aluminum.The main advantage was it was compact and lightweight, weighing only 144 kg (318 lb). In the Buick it was tuned to a maximum power output of 185 hp, also Oldsmobile used the same engine in their car as well and got the figure up to 215 hp. The engine was very successful in both models with sales of 376,799 cars built for the Buick engine in just three years. Oldsmobile also made as many engines for their cars.. There were coolant and oil issues if the correct antifreeze was not used, and the reality that alloy engine was quite expensive to build than its iron stablemate. Buick and Oldsmobile made the decision to cease production of this all aluminum engine because of some of these reasons. Buick then went on to make an iron alternative of the engine and a cut down V6 model that went on to 2008.
In January 1964 Rover, American operations head J Bruce McWilliams went to investigate the possibility of buying the American V8 engine for Rover. When Mc Williams was negotiating sales of Rovers gas turbine engine and diesel engine to Mercury Marine he discovered the Buick engine. In any case, McWilliams saw that the lightweight Buick V8 had lots of potential for the British market and would be ideal for smaller British cars and could replace the heavier smaller iron engine already in the Rover P5, indeed, it weighed less than many straight-4 engines in Britain at the time. Mc William and William -Hurst eventually persuaded GM to sell the tooling to Rover so they could produce the Rover engine. Joe Turley, retiring Buick engineer then moved to the UK to assist Rover set up the tooling. The Rover engine became a great success.
It started life in the Rover P5 model and went on to the P6 smaller car, then it was put into the Rover SD1 where they produced a tuned Vitesse model with nearly 200bhp. Range Rover also used the Rover engine in their vehicles. The engine was widely sold by Rover to small car builders, and has appeared in a wide variety of vehicles. The Rover engine also appeared in TVR, Morgan, Triumph and many more.
The first use of the engine was in a car called the Warick 350GT that never saw the light of day. They have even been used in light aircraft due to their light weight and high power output. The Rover V8 has long become the icon engine with hot rod and custom car use in Britain, much as the Chevrolet small-block V8 is for American tuning scene. Some US car builders also used the engine in their sporty cars such as the Chevy Vega and MGB.
Buick themselves started using the same aluminum heads on their 300 cubic inch engine with a longer crankshaft to lighten and increase power of their engine back in 1964. You could then use the Buick head on the Rover engine with a few mods to get more power out of it. The Rover SD1 was the last Rover produced car to have the V8 engine in it.
The engine was still used in Range Rovers, Discovery’s until Land Rover was sold to Ford by BMW. The production of the engine still carried on with license given to MCT engineering by Land Rover to keep the engine going. Although Land Rover switched to using Jaguar engines for their vehicles, MCT continued churning out limited Rover engines for aftermarket use and replacements.

We all know that the price for auto repair can vary depending on the vehicle model and the year it was constructed. What most of us don t know is how these auto repair shops bill us for their auto repair labor costs. Almost every auto repair shop tends to charge high prices regardless of your motorcar make, but the manner they calculate the auto repair labor cost is rather fascinating. Let’s have a look at a special means of doing this.
If you had a personal garage or knew someone who could fix your automobile, you could be one of the lucky few. Unfortunately many individuals have to go to an auto repair shop even if they like it or not. This is because most auto repair shops have qualified individuals and they do the job right. Nonetheless the auto repair labor costs are charged in a particular fashion that it can appear unfair for numerous while the rest might get a gain outside of it.
Most auto repair shops use the Mitchell Standardized labor rates table to calculate the full auto repair labor costs. Most of the individuals are not mindful of how this is done. If you considered that the specific parts of the car that was fixed determined the auto repair labor rates, think again. The Mitchell Standardized table is various from the regular we have heard about. According to the calculations of this, it wouldn t matter if a novice or an expert repaired your motorcar.
The Mitchell table has the average hours a mechanic would normally take to repair a particular component of a particular motorcar model. For instance, the average time to fix the brakes of a Honda Civic 2000 model would take around 2 hours. These auto repair labor rates are standard and accepted across the country. Although there can be minor differences, the basic principles remain the same.
The better component about this is that the loss or gain will effect from how the mechanic does his job. For example, if a beginner replaced the brakes, there is a higher probability that he d pass more than 2 hours to perfect the job. Even if he did take a longer time, the auto shop wouldn t be capable to bill the car owner for a high price. But if it was an skilled who completes the job in 1 hours time, the auto owner will still be charged for the 2 hour auto repair labor rate and thus effect in a benefit for the auto repair shop.
