Volvo Cars kicked things off early at 2007 Geneva Motor Show with the revelation of two ordinary Scandinavian wagons with not-so-ordinary power: the V70 and the XC70. According to the enthusiasts, the wagons have come a long way from the original.

The new Volvo V70 midsize wagon is the third model to use the moniker. Unlike its predecessors, the third generation V70 is an estate version with modified new grille and front bumper for a more captivating look. The automaker, armed with its 54-year expertise in the wagon manufacture, also introduces improved flexibility, luxury and safety in all-new V70. “This segment has been our specialty ever since we invented it back in the 1950s,” said Volvo Cars President and CEO Fredrik Arp. “Our competitors can count on us remaining number one in the future, too. In the all-new V70, rear passengers and luggage both ride in first class.”

The Volvo XC70, on the other hand, shares same powerful stance of the V70 station wagon. However, while the V70 flaunts speed, the Volvo XC70 showcases improved ground clearance and more protective cladding. Volvo tail lights created an illusion of stretching exterior edges for a curvaceous wagon.

The Volvo XC70 has retained its alluring pull. “We had a winning concept from the very outset and we have continuously refined it,” said Arp. “The all-new XC70 maintains its tough, capable attitude while at the same time growing more comfortable. Additionally, our design team has given the vehicle a more elegant, more luxurious look.”

Both the wagons brought along interesting features in the façade and exterior. While they belong to the same Scandinavian family, the automaker has done a good job in giving them different personalities. Volvo integrated many styling cues from the new S80 to make the wagons equally-captivating as the sedan. The wagons are given strong lines and sporty edges to give them a moving forward appearance.

Inside Volvo wagons are high-end car amenities and systems. They include comfy seats, refined audio System, and the slim center stack, which has eventually become a trademark of the Volvos. Under the hood is the 6-cylinder engine, which is offered for the first time by the automaker. In Europe, the turbocharged 5-cylinder and two diesel options will be made available.

The V70 and the XC70 have improved their capabilities as well as luxury offers. They did not wipe away the utility factor of a wagon but it has stressed wagons new-found functionality. The cargo space was increased and the rear seat that easily folds with a 40/20/40 split was also introduced.
